Tree Cabling and Bracing Basics
What You Should Know

Do you have a mature tree with multiple trunks or low hanging limbs? Sometimes the issue can be too complex for regular pruning maintenance. Cabling and bracing techniques help support the physical structure of a tree before it results in property damage, injury, or the loss of the tree itself.
What is Cabling and Bracing
Arborists install flexible cables and rigid bracing rods to help support weak branches, redistribute structural stress, and adjust split limbs or trunks. This is all done in order to protect or improve the structural integrity of trees. The weight of the canopy typically effects more mature trees than young ones. Especially after storms, heavy snow, and even the weight of wet foliage, a tree could use some support that properly placed cables can provide.
Cabling can also help hold up lower branches to provide the proper clearance over a walkway, driveway, or roof. Sometimes cabling is easier that removing the branch—depending on the time of year, location, and situation.
U-shaped branches are stronger than more narrow V-shaped ones. Sometimes trees with a more narrow angle could develop a vertical split down the branch or trunk. Use a bracing rod along with cables to help protect the tree from further damage.
Cabling and Bracing Materials
The hardware used for cabling and bracing projects are exposed to the elements, making them prone to deterioration. The placement of these materials can also move over time due to weather and normal branch movement. Inspect cables and braces annually to ensure they’re doing what needs to be done to support the tree.
A certified arborist should help with the assessment, installation, and inspection of the cables and braces. You want to make sure the job is done right. All trees and situations are different, so having someone familiar with the area and types of tree involved is key.
