“Timber!” Whether you want it to fall or not, how you remove a fallen tree can be a process. Depending on how the tree falls, you may be able to get free assistance with removing it from your property. From old age to storm damage, toppling trees come with a set of rules on what to do once it hits the ground.
Removing a Fallen Tree on Your Property
Just like anything else, trees grow old and can deteriorate in the process. If you have a tree that’s rotting or diseased, it’s best to remove it before it falls and does more damage. Once it falls, it’s up to you to remove it, either on your property or if it lands in your neighbors yard. If you live in an area with a tree-lined public street or near a park, and one of those trees falls on your property, you should call a local official to see who is responsible for removal.
When there’s a natural disaster—tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or wildfire—that causes down trees in your area, you may also receive assistance in cleaning it up. Once you know who or what is responsible for the tree falling, you can better determine who is responsible for its removal.
How to Remove a Fallen Tree
What’s the condition of the tree on the ground? Is the trunk still intact? Did it rip the stump out of the ground? Did it fall apart into many rotting pieces? Cleaning up after a tree falls may require some heavy duty machinery—like chain saws, wood chippers, or cranes to remove large pieces of trunk. The best way to remove the tree is to call in a professional. They can asses the damage and provide the tools and experience necessary to get the job done right.
Even if you know how to operate heavy machinery, it’s always best to wear the proper protective gear. Gloves, goggles, helmet, hearing protection, and the right shoes are important safety precautions to take.
What to do with a Fallen Tree
Seeing a tree trunk laying on your property may not be as traumatic as you think. Some people will see a load of free firewood or lumber to create a wide range or furniture and craft items. Depending on the tree that fell, people will pay good money for solid walnut, cherry, or redwood varieties.
If the tree falls in a more wooded area of your property, consider not removing it at all. It could become a natural bench, table, fence, or other accent piece. Nature will also take its course with an old rotting log. Soon it will become part of the natural landscape and maybe even a future home for some woodland creatures.
