Before, During, and After a Storm

Whether the area you live is susceptible to hurricanes, tornados, or other natural disasters, there’s a way to help prepare for possible storm damage to your yard. While you may think a strong, seemingly healthy tree could withstand the forces of a large storm, you could be underestimating the power of Mother Nature.
Preparing for Storm Damage
There are several things you can do before the storm even hits to prepare for the worst:
1. Find the nearest certified arborist or tree care company. If you build a relationship with professionals before an emergency situation arises, you’re more likely to pick the right company, and they’re more likely to answer your call first.
2. Assess your trees, looking for trouble spots. Address any issues before a storm makes them worse. Certain things to look for include:
- Cracks in tree trunks
- Broken or leaning limbs
- Decay and fungus
- Branches hanging over the roof or utility lines.
3. Prevent damage by removing damaged limbs, inspect leaning trees, and pruning branches close to your house or utilities. A professional would be better suited to address issues with trees in a compromising condition.
What to do During a Storm
Keep yourself safe. Stay indoors. If you’ve properly prepared, you’ll have less to worry about. Follow any evacuation procedures and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Cleaning up Storm Damage
Protect yourself and your property by being aware of your surroundings while cleaning up after a storm. Trees may have brought down dangerous power lines and created treacherous conditions. Assess the situation like you did before the storm. Call in the pros when needed.
If you’re doing the work yourself, wear protective gear while you remove any broken, jagged branches. Try not to over-prune. The tree may not look perfect, but it needs to be able to heal. Uprooted or downed trees may require a chainsaw to get it out of the area.
While you can’t predict what a storm will do to your trees and yard, you can prepare yourself and help keep your property safe. Contact Elite Tree Care with any additional questions about cleaning up storm damage and help protect your yard and family before it’s too late.
