Spring Tree Pruning

It’s Time to Wake Up Your Yard

Spring is just about to bloom, which means that plants are about to awaken from their dormant state. This is one of the best times for pruning. Find out how spring tree pruning will benefit your plants best.

Why Spring?

Many trees and plants love to be pruned in late winter, early spring. Why?

  • Plants are less likely to sustain cold shocks to the system where they’re cut.
  • Trees are still bare, so it’s easy to spot broken limbs, awkward branches, signs of disease, and where to cut.
  • Pruning cuts stimulate new growth, which is what you want your plants to do this season.

Spring Tree Pruning Tips

Any time you’re about to prune a tree, it’s best to know what you’re doing—for the sake of the tree’s health and the look of your yard. Follow these simple steps, or better yet, contact a professional tree trimming company to help.

  1. Use a sharp pruning saw and make clean cuts.
  2. When removing heavy branches, avoid ripping the bark by shortening the branch in pieces to the size of a stub. Then cut it off at the branch collar.
  3. About a foot from the branch collar, make a cut from the underside about a third of the way through.
  4. About an inch further, cut through the top until the branch rips off. It should split cleanly between the two cuts.
  5. Make the final cut by placing the saw beside the branch bark ridge and cutting downward just outside the branch collar.

Depending on the type, size, and location of your tree, you may want to contact a specialist to come and prune for you. Elite Tree Care can help you with many tree-related issues during any season to ensure the job is done right.
