Spring is a season of renewal, growth, warmer weather, and hydrating rain—making it great time to plant a tree. There are a few specific steps to prepare for spring tree planting. Done properly, you can set the stage for a healthy start for a new plant.
The Plan Before You Plant
Before you break ground for a brand new tree, there are a few very important initial steps.
- Assess the site. Determine where you want to plant the tree. You may have a perfect spot in mind, but remember the main factors any plant needs to survive: sun exposure, soil quality, and water drainage. Also, consider the proximity to existing vegetation that may compete for resources as well as structures that may become potential obstacles once the tree reaches its full size.
- Plant selection. Once you know the type of space you’re dealing with, you should pick the type of plant that can thrive there. Choose a native species that can better acclimate to the environment. Select a spring-friendly variety so that it’s more well-suited to the current conditions.
- Procuring healthy plants. Nowadays there are many ways to shop for plants. From seeds to potted plants, you can get just about anything delivered, no matter where you live. It’s best to buy plants from a local supplier to help ensure high quality and health. Inspect any plant for signs of distress from its foliage to the color of the roots. Acclimate the plant to the outdoors before transplanting to help minimize shock.
How you prepare for tree planting is crucial for maintaining a healthy plant. If there’s not enough resources, if it’s not the right tree, and if it’s not in the right spot, you could end up having to replant elsewhere or spend more time trying to nurse it back to health.
Spring Planting Techniques
Once you have the right spot and the right tree, it’s time to prepare the site and plant.
- Clear away any debris, weeds, or competing vegetation.
- Loosen the soil to improve aeration and drainage, and add organic matter if necessary.
- Take care not to disturb any existing roots or soil structure during site preparation.
- Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots of the saplings without bending or crowding.
- Position the root ball at the appropriate depth, ensuring that the collar is level with the soil surface.
- Backfill the hole gently, firming the soil around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
- Water the newly planted tree thoroughly immediately after planting to settle the soil and provide moisture to the roots.
- Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Throughout the spring, monitor soil moisture regularly and water the trees as needed, especially during dry spells. The soil should stay moist but not sopping wet. A newly planted tree will need more care and attention until it’s become established.
You’ll also want to regularly monitor the tree for signs of disease, pests, or other issues. Prune any dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth. Having a regular maintenance schedule helps ensure the ongoing health and vitality of your trees.
