As many gardeners know, mushrooms are part of the fungi family. While not all fungus is inherently bad, it could be a warning sign for a larger issue. If you see mushrooms growing on your trees, learn about what this indicates and what to do about it.
Why Mushrooms Grow on Trees
Even though you can grow mushrooms for a variety of reasons, they can also grow naturally on their own. However, if you haven’t planted them, it could mean a few things depending on where they’re growing.
- Decay. Mushrooms growing on a tree often means the fungus has colonized the tree’s wood.
- Compromised Health. Healthy trees have stronger defenses against fungal infections, so mushrooms are a sign tree is stressed, damaged, diseased, or weak.
- Structural Weakness. Mushrooms near the base of the trunk or large branches can indicate internal rot, which compromises the tree’s structure.
- Environmental Stress. More mushrooms may appear during periods of drought or pest infestations. Compacted soil may also lead to root damage, making the tree more susceptible to fungal infections.
Not all mushroom growth is bad. In fact, if you see them growing on a stump, it could help speed the decaying process and assist with stump removal. However, if you notice more mushroom growth on a seemingly healthy tree, it’s time to act to help restore the tree’s strength and stability.
What to do about Mushrooms
Sometimes mushroom growth is more noticeable than other indicators of distress. At the first sign of fungi, take the following steps to help determine the underlying issues.
- Inspect the tree. Look for other issues, such as dead branches, wilting leaves, or cracks in the bark.
- Consult an arborist. A tree care specialist can help assess plant health and determine if it needs treatment or is at risk of falling.
- Monitor nearby trees. Some fungi spread through root systems or spores, so other trees in the area could be at risk.
While not all mushrooms indicate severe problems, they should prompt further investigation. Contact Elite Tree Care if you believe your tree requires fungal treatment to ensure its health and your safety.
