Is it…Dead?

Signs Your Tree is in Trouble

Dead tree

During the winter, trees may look barren without their leaves, but that doesn’t mean there’s a problem. However, even without the leaves, there could be signs of tree disease. Learn what to look for.

Signs of Tree Disease

During the spring and summer, it’s easier to tell if your tree may be dead or diseased—the leaves give it away. Leaf discoloration or early defoliation are two telltale signs your tree is sick or not getting enough nutrients. But the following signs are easier to spot in the winter when there are no leaves in the way:

  • Peeling, cracked, or discolored bark with fungus spores
  • Soft, crumbly wood
  • Dry branches that break easily
  • A heavy lean could mean the roots are weaker on one side
  • Mushrooms at base of tree could indicate root rot
  • Stunted growth is another sign of root damage

If you notice any of these problems, it’s best to have an arborist inspect the tree to confirm any issues. The right course of treatment depends on the type of problem you’re dealing with.

Causes of Tree Problems

Tree issues stem from a number of different conditions:

  • Poor soil
  • Extreme weather
  • Storm damage
  • Drought
  • Pests
  • Disease

After a certified arborist determines what could be causing a decline in tree health, it’s easier to apply the correct treatment, such as:

  • Fertilization
  • Irrigation
  • Aeration
  • Fungicide
  • Pesticide
  • Bracing

Worst case scenario, the tree is beyond repair and needs to come down. Since this is a complicated process—especially if a tree is weak and unpredictable—a professional tree care company should also handle the tree removal process.
